Notes on Oonie Chase’s No Guts, No Fucking Glory!

Emotion trumps reason. But too often UX folks listen only to the facts and ignore emotion, i.e. their “gut”

So try asking some new questions to get to a new solution space:

How lovable is your product?

What does a minimum lovable version look like?

Does the product make you feel something?

What would you make if you didn’t have to make it work?

  • Sometimes you need to suspend judgement on how you’ll engineer something to give yourself enough space to imagine something truly new and different
  • One technique they use at Weiden + Kennedy: 100 Post Its. Make sure your team is well-informed about the product space first. Give them 100 Post Its and a short period of time to fill them with 100 ideas
    •  The team will quickly exhaust the easy answers and move into the realm of the improbable. Keep going! There can be gold in those hills

Get your fucking swagger on! Convince those around you to sometimes push the boundaries

Don’t ignore your data and research—but don’t ignore your emotions/gut either! Let them fight it out. It can be uncomfortable at times and that’s ok (though not pleasant). This is were the magic comes from!
